Blue-Ringed "Socktopus"

by Jessica
(usa)

When my boyfriend’s cousin learned she was pregnant, I was probably more excited than she was, since at long last I had an excuse to begin knitting toys.

The Blue-Ringed octopus was the first toy I knitted for Shaydee. He was made with shepherd’s wool brand yarn, a specialty hand-spun yarn from a small sheep farm in Maryland. The yarn was bought at Fiber Space in Alexandria, Virginia.

The needles I used were a size two double-pointed knitting needle. Needles this small are generally not available in big box stores like AC Moore or Michael’s, and I bought those at Fiber Space as well. All in all, they ended up being the most expensive part of the project, at twelve dollars for four needles.

The blue ringed octopus was knitted in ten separate pieces. First I knitted each of his eight arms separately, and then I joined them at the top by knitting a small tube, and at the bottom by decreasing stitches until the octopus had a flat "bottom” to sit on.

Then I knitted his head and face separately, added his button eyes, stuffed him with fiberfill, and sewed the mantle to the arms. I considered adding pipe cleaners to his arms to make them bendable, but since he was meant to be a child’s toy I refrained from doing that.

The most difficult part was probably seaming the head to the arms, since seaming two knitted pieces together without leaving a visible seam can be difficult. The blue ringed octopus, now known as “Socktopus,” is Shaydee’s beloved companion and, according to reports, accompanies her everywhere she goes.
