Crocheted Robot and Snail

Crocheted Robot and Snail

I crocheted my way through the last few weeks of my pregnancy, creating many sweaters, hats, and toys for our soon-to-be-born son. My very favorite was a crocheted robot and matching snail.

Each was made with four colors of basic yarn (not baby yarn): blue, light blue, grey, and multicolored.

I didn’t use any pattern for the robot, instead I began sewing in the round and let the character grow on my hook until I had an idea of what I wanted the final product to look like.

Once I had the grey part of the body (top half) complete, I had the idea to add a few stripes. Before closing it up, I stuffed him with some old t-shirt scraps and sewed on arms, legs, safety eyes, and a little smile. (The antennae was a complete afterthought requested by my husband.)

The snail was partially based off of an amigurumi pattern. My favorite part of each of these little guys, however, are the small embroidered tags I sewed onto their backs – the robot’s says “KGB 2010” since that is what we called our baby prior to deciding on a name, and the snail has a little license-plate-type tag that reads “CHASE ME,” a play on words that includes the slow speed of a snail and the name of our son.

Chase is now eight months old and loves these toys; they sit on his shelf with the rest of his “stuffies.” I enjoy watching him play with them not only because I made them, but because I know that the filling and yarn are safe for him to put in his mouth.

I’ve since made quite a few similar toys for friends who are expecting children, and all of the gifts have been well-received!
