Get Important Facts about SIDS, Including The Causes of SIDS and SIDS Prevention Measures. Make Sure You Provide a Safe Sleep Environment For Your Baby.
The known SIDS facts are still few and far between despite ongoing research by pediatricians and safe sleep experts. There is still so much we don't know about the causes of SIDS and why this phenomenon affects some babies and not others.
However, what we do know is that SIDS prevention measures have reduced the occurrence of SIDS dramatically over the past few years. Before we look at the infant safety measures you can take to prevent SIDS from occurring in your baby nursery, here are a few facts about SIDS that we do know:
What Is SIDS?
SIDS is short for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, otherwise known as Cot death. It is the sudden death of an infant, under one year of age, that remains unexplained after a complete post-mortem investigation, including an autopsy, an examination of the scene of death, and a review of the case history.
Causes of SIDS
The causes of SIDS seem to be a combination of many factors including immature development of cardio-respiratory control mechanisms, defective arousability from sleep in response to breathing difficulties, medical conditions that compromise breathing, and a lack of safe sleep measures.
How often does SIDS occur?
One of the most shocking facts about SIDS is that it is the leading cause of death in infants between one month and one year of age. In the United States, it occurs in approximately 1 in 1,000 babies. Currently, around 3,000 babies die from SIDS each year in the United States.
When is SIDS most likely to occur?
Ninety percent of SIDS occurs by six months of age, with most cases occurring between two and four months of age. For the first two months of a baby's life, baby doesn't sleep long enough to reach a dangerous condition. After four months the baby is much larger and more animated during sleep and, therefore, much less likely to succumb to SIDS.
SIDS occurs during an infant's sleep, either night time or naptime and occurs most frequently between 10 p.m. and 10 a.m., with the peak time of death around 5 a.m. SIDS is more common during the winter months. For unknown reasons, SIDS is higher in males than females by a ratio of 1.5 to 1.0.
