One of my favorite knitting books for babies is the adorable Itty-Bitty Nursery. A popular project in this book is the Pure and Sweet Layette set, which includes patterns for a hat, blanket, sweater and socks.

I had a friend who was nine months pregnant, so I knitted her a slightly revamped version of the hat and sweater. (Although I didn't know the gender of the baby, he ended up being a boy, so the colors were perfect!)

The book's version is done all in off-white, using Rowan's Handknit Cotton in color Bleached. But I wanted the snowflakes to show up better, and I had some navy and white Handknit Cotton on hand - the combination ended up really bringing out the little starry/snowflake motifs, which were embroidered after the knitting of the hat.

I also made the matching baby sweater, which was quite a project, even though it was very small. I didn't sew in the sleeves very well - I should have set them in more, because the sleeve caps puckered a little. Also, the fasteners were a pain to knit.

I made a couple of changes on the sweater. The authors of the book want you to knit the front garter edgings separately on smaller needles and then sew them on. But I hate sewing and didn't want to make extra work for myself. So, I just knitted the first and last four stitches in garter along with the stockinette fronts, instead of putting the stitches on stitch holders for later and then sewing them.
